Urban Hub at Liberal Democrat party conference kicked off on the evening on Sunday 14th September with an evening reception, sponsored by the Westfield Group with a welcome from Simon Holberton of Westfield. Attendees heard speeches from Julia Goldsworthy, shadow spokesperson for communities and local government on her vision for the Liberal Democrats' urban policy, and Newcastle leader, Councillor John Shipley OBE, on the future for regeneration in the UK.
The Centre for Cities, with Laing O'Rourke, hosted Urban Hub's first fringe event on skilling up cities with Lord McNally, Liberal Democrat Leader in the House of Lords, Niels Kriek, from Laing O'Rourke and Councillor John Shipley. Attendees debated the potential pitfalls of work placements, the future of further education and the challenges of attracting more young people into construction and growing sectors in UK cities.
This was followed by a Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) event, 'An estate of mind' - Does new housing have to mean soulless neighbourhoods? Lembit Opik, Shadow Housing Minister, was joined by Adrian Harvey, Head of Public Affairs at CABE and Joe Kerr from the Royal College of Art, with Gideon Amos of the Town and Country Planning Association in the chair. Attendees debated the importance of neighbourhoods designed around the needs of communities, rather than carved out of the places developers leave behind.
