Hard Times: what will the changing economic climate mean for cities?

Liberal Democrat Conference 2008 - Bournemouth

The Work Foundation

08:00-09:00
Clifton Suite, Hermitage Hotel

In general, the past decade has been a good time for our cities. Economies have been rejuvenated, jobs have been plentiful and property markets have boomed. Although the benefits of this growth have been unequal, our cities have been resurgent.

Yet the slowdown of the economy may put all this in danger. The last year has seen a collapse in bank lending, problems in the mortgage market and initial signs that the labour market may be weakening. This session explored the implications of the changing macroeconomic environment for different UK cities and ask how local, regional and national policymakers should respond.

Speakers and panel: Simon Hughes MP (Liberal Democrat shadow leader and Party President), Alexandra Jones (The Work Foundation), Stephen Alambritis (Federation of Small Businesses).
